Eliza Frances Reynolds
and 2nd Thomas Davis

Eliza Frances Reynolds married 2nd to Thomas Davis. Thanks to Kristie Reynolds for finding our Granny and her second husband in the 1910 Millstone, Letcher,  KY Census. (Sorry, I don't know anything about this husband. Neither Granny nor our Dad, Creed or any of the family ever spoke of this man or this marriage).

Thomas Davis is age 47 in the census and Eliza (Granny) is age 33 in the census. Thomas Davis was born in 1863. He is listed as head of household with his son John M Davis age 8 (born 1902) by a previous marriage.  Also in their household are stepchildren, Creed (our Dad) age 6, Jonas age 14, and Virgie Leah age 14. (Stepchildren are children of Eliza and Mart Potter). Dad's sister, Sarah Potter is not in the household. She would have been 11 years of age.

Leona Smith Fuller 1884 married (3rd) Joel Martin "Mart" Potter 1875. Leona was the daughter of Hilliard J Smith b 1855 and Armelda "Melda" Combs b 1862. Leona married 1st Jim Hale and 2nd Green Fuller. Joel Martin "Mart" Potter 1875 and Leona Smith 1884 married late in life and had no children from their marriage.

After the death of both their spouses, our Father's Father married our Mother's Mother. Our Grandpa Mart married both our Grandmothers. Leona and "Mart" married later in life and had no children from their marriage.

Although Mart is not buried with our Mammaw, and is buried by his 2nd wife in the Potter Family Cemetery, he was married to our Mammaw, Leona Smith Hale Fuller Potter, when he died. Mart died at home in bed. He went to bed the night he died and was found dead in the morning by our Mammaw. She was devastated.

Mart is buried in the Potter Family Cemetery in Payne Gap KY. Here is a picture of "Mart" Potter's Tombstone. Mart's parents Abraham Potter 1837  and Sarah "Sallie" Wright are also buried in the Potter Family Cemetery near him. When Mart died, Gladys Potter came to our Mammaw's house and went through her home to remove all of Mart's things.  Mammaw Leona Fuller was an extraordinary woman. She raised her own food, made clothing for her family and for other families. She made featherbeds and even the stuff that held the feathers. She was the best cook ever and made huge meals for her large family.

She was the hardest working woman I've ever known and the happiest. Mammaw ran a boarding house where she fed all the workers that built the roads and the worked in the mines and built the railroads. Mammaw did a lot of things to raise her family including a bit of bootlegging. Of course, we kids never knew about that part of her life until we were grown. Mammaw also made clothing for the wealthy people in her area.

Mammaw lived in a log cabin that was up on a hill and behind her house was her garden, and her animals (cows, chickens and pigs and such), her fruit trees (I remember climbing up in her cherry tree and eating cherries), her ice cold spring, and her "cellar" for keeping her potatoes and other things over the winter.

She canned all kinds of stuff and always had plenty to eat because of all the foods she "put up". The stuff I liked best was her home made butter. I've never found any butter anywhere like hers. Her butter was very white and it was sweet and not greasy at all.  She would always have lots of butter and serve it with her home made biscuits and cornbread at every meal. Man that was good eating! We could make a meal out of her butter and bread.

She entertained us all by telling us great scary stories, reading coffee grounds in the bottom of teacups and she sang songs as she played music on the dulcimer. I just loved her very much and I've never met another person like her.  When we were at her home, we would sit out on the porch in the good country air, watch the lightening bugs, and listen to stories and tales while the night sounds of the beautiful mountains enveloped us.

Mammaw didn't have an indoor bathroom, but we never knew the difference. When we were at her home, we loved every minute of it. She was a great woman and I can't tell you how much we miss her.  Mart Potter died in 1949 and Mammaw died in 1966. Mammaw is buried in the Isom Cemetery, Isom, KY. Here is a picture of Mammaw's Tombstone in Isom, KY behind the Presbyterian Church.
